How Does ULEZ Affect Motorhomes?

ULEZ, also known as the Ultra Low Emission Zone, is a regulation in London that helps manage air pollution.

While this affects cars, motorbikes, and vans, you may be wondering how it impacts motorhome travellers.

Today, Melling Motorhomes will discuss ULEZ in detail, and its potential impact on your travel plans to London.

What is ULEZ?

ULEZ was launched by Transport for London (TfL) in 2019 with the intent to tackle air quality issues in the city and thereby improve public health.

This operates 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, except on Christmas Day. It covers the same space as Central London’s Congestion Charge Zone; however, it’s set to extend to the North and South circular roads.

The primary goal of this project is to reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels by targeting the most polluting vehicles in the city. NO2 is known to cause respiratory issues and other health problems.

Emission Standards for Motorhomes

There are certain specific emissions standards you must meet in order to avoid the daily charge for your motorhome. This includes:

  • Euro 4 Standard for Petrol Engines: This was adopted in 2005 and applies to retro RVs. According to this, vehicles must not emit more than 0.1 g/km of hydrocarbons, 1.0 g/km of carbon monoxide, and 0.08 g/km of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Compliance with this means that your vehicle has relatively low harmful emissions, and it can travel within ULEZ without the risk of charges.
  • Euro 6 Standard for Diesel Engines: Diesel RVs are required to adhere to the stricter Euro 6 standard, which was implemented for new cars in 2015. This limits NOx emissions to 0.08 g/km and particulate matter to 0.005 g/km.

How to Check Compliance

You can check your compliance through the Transport for London (TfL) ULEZ vehicle checker.

There are some exemptions and special cases when it comes to charges for ULEZ. This includes:

  • Disabled vehicles: RVs registered more than 40 years ago are exempt from ULEZ fees.
  • Historic vehicles: Vehicles registered under the disabled tax class are exempt from ULEZ charges.
  • Retrofitting options: if your vehicle doesn’t meet the current standards for ULEZ, you can achieve compliance by retrofitting with advanced emission control systems, such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) or Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF).

The Consequences of Non-Compliance

Ignoring the ULEZ regulations can have negative environmental and financial repercussions for motorhome users.

Non-compliant motorhome users must pay £12.50 every day the vehicle is driven within the ULEZ area in London. If you fail to pay this daily charge, you will face a penalty charge of £160. This will be reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days.

If you continue to show non-compliance, regulatory authorities may increase your scrutiny. Repeat offenders may be subject to regular checks and monitoring, which could lead to the restriction of access to certain areas.

Tips for Compliance

It’s important to ensure your vehicle is compliant with ULEZ regulations whether you live in London or are planning to travel there.

Here are some practical tips to implement to avoid issues:

  1. Invest in an electric or hybrid motorhome as they produce low emissions.
  2. Purchase a newer motorhome that meets Euro 6 standards for diesel engines or Euro 4 standards for petrol engines.
  3. Ensure that any retrofitting is done by professionals who use technology accredited by schemes such as the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS).
  4. Regularly check that your exhaust and engine systems are in great condition.
  5. Complete routine changes to your oil systems and air filters to avoid pollutants.
  6. Use navigation tools to plan your travel routes, avoiding ULEZ areas if possible.
